Discussion 8: Final Presentations Discussion

I felt a lot of my fellow classmates presented very unique perspectives for each of their presentations. It was very interesting to see how each person’s association with teaching effected what thing they presented. It seems that many tied personal interest in the form of their subject areas into the use of a unique technology tool.

I have to give a shout out to Arriel, for his in depth explanation and knowledge of the use of technology. His presentation definitely intrigued me and impacted both my personal and professional views of technology. The reason why this particular presentation impacted my views of technology is due to the showing of how technology is effectively used in a real life teaching situation.

The digital story, entitled The Nature of War is based upon the experiences of Justin Cliburn an Oklahoma Army Nation Guard member, deployed to Iraq. The story primarily focuses on Cliburn’s interaction and friendship with two Iraqi boys, but also primarily focuses on the lasting impressions that one boy’s death has on Cliburn. When Cliburn first meets Ali and Ahmed, this starts a rising action in which these three individuals are in the process of becoming familiar with each other. Once all three of these individuals establish a bond with each other, they become more comfortable, and they are able to laugh and play together when time permits. This is the climax of the story, which shows the point in which Cliburn, Ali, and Ahmed’s friendship and time together were most prevalent. When Ali is injured in a car bomb explosion this moves the story into falling action, because it is at the point in which the friends start to grow apart, or their relationship is most troubled. The resolution never seems to come in this story, based upon Cliburn’s explanation he always thinks about what happened to Ali after Ahmed’s death. My first reaction to the narrative is that it is very genuine and original, the narrative is made stronger in the beginning by what seems to be a conversation between two people. The visuals are very unique, they seem to be very well thought out and planned and definitely relate to the story that is being told. The audio in this digital story matches the video, and the narrative. When first listening I was intrigued by the fact there seemed to be a conversation between two people when explaining Cliburn’s encounter with Ali. The effectiveness of this digital story has a lot to do with the use of both audio and video, and also a great narrative. If an audio or text based form were to be used instead of the current form, the digital story does not have the same authenticity. In this case the current form allows the viewer to understand from the exact perspective of Justin Cliburn.

Implementing a project in my future classroom involving the use of code depends on what the code is used to do, and if it supports the goals and objectives issued by the school district. This type of tool started an at an early age can be very beneficial to so many students, and even at a late age the understanding of and ability to use this tool can open many doors in the everyday learning process. The Implementation of code based learning programs is very practical, but to do so would require the understanding of code. I have never been introduced to the use of code or HTML. I have to say that I am not very interested in code or programs that are like it. Growing up in primary and in secondary education, I was not exposed to code, and I really don’t think it would have made a difference in my understanding and learning ability. There are many schools in school districts that may not see use of such methods as being useful. The article points out that the learning how to use code can create critical thinking skills and other skills of that nature. The benefits of learning how to use code make it very practical to use, the benefits of learning and using this program. Because the children are digital natives, it does seem to give them a slight advantage in the understanding of the use of code compared to a digital immigrant. I really believe that this comparison all depends on the background of the individual person. Some digital natives may not be able to understand code as a digital immigrant can. The statement that “coding is so easy a child can do it” has some validity based upon the society that we live in. The younger generation seems to be more and more understanding about things such as coding when exposed to it at very young ages compared to older generations. Tool functionality advancements help support the truth of this statement but so do resources and exposure to coding.

My TPACK has changed because of the additions to my original beliefs. Based upon learning about things such as resource availability, collaborative work, and project size, my TPACK has changed to include other details that I feel are needed. The use of the PBL was essential in my understanding how to relate to TPACK. The PBL element gave structure to my understanding of how TPACK can be used through the category tools provided. The use of Practical Technology Integration Framework, allowed for my TPACK understanding to grow step by step based upon the Bloom’s level that each category addressed. The structure that the framework presented allowed for my TPACK to evolve in steps of understanding, with each step adding to the evolution. For future use I can apply this evolving TPACK to technology integration by not only understanding what students have access to technological resources, but also understanding how to use technology integration to allow collaborative work.

The tools in this category are made for editing and production, and these tools allow the user to compile media such as audio and video, and organize these materials to create a meaningful product. The category connects to Bloom’s levels by allowing creativity through making media related to a topic.

I had an “ah ha” moment in this module while determining which category tool that I should use. This had to do with figuring out which tool in the module would best fit the example artifact I needed to create. This module gives two options so I struggled with deciding which option to use.

An additional tool that fits into the audio editing category is Wavosaur. This tool fits into the category because it gives the user an ability to create and also edit audio files. http://www.wavosaur.com/#

The characteristics of the tools in this category are geared towards assembling artifacts that are original, using tools that are designed to create things such as books, drawings, music, applications, and three dimensional designs. This category connects with blooms levels because it allows creativity in the use of programs. The blooms level words that describe this category such as creating, making, inventing, and constructing all describe a category that it made to make an original artifact.

I felt an “ah ha” moment, when I first started working on the module, because I was not sure how I could relate any of my TEKS standards with the category and create an artifact.

Gimp is tool that fits into drawing applications tools category, and it fits in because it essentially allows you to edit and create photographs. It also allows you to draw and manipulate pictures and photos. http://www.gimp.org/

This video is definitely interesting because it gives a different perspective about what is original. As students, even from high school we are taught against plagiarism. But essentially when we credit ideas that we use we are in some way remixing, maybe not changing the idea but we are incorporating the original idea into our idea, but we are doing it legally. It seems that this is just like what artist do, they sample within the legal boundaries. I think that it is important to understand that an original idea or concept most likely stemmed from someone hundreds or thousands of years ago. I feel that the title of this video does so much justice, because everything seems to be a remix of some other work done previously. Maybe rather than remixing an idea, others build onto the idea like a pyramid, adding small blocks of meaning; maybe these ideas stem from a tree like branches. I feel that the video creator did a great job by providing a background for remixing. When applied to education, when students just copy and never give credit that is the exact opposite of remixing. Remixing in this area, is giving credit in the form of proper citation. Educational remixing is equivalent to artist’s legally sampling music. The line between plagiarism and remixing is much defined, to those students which are concerned and informed about it.
