In this lesson the teacher will use the online bookmarking tool Zotero. The purpose and use of this tool will be to show 11 and 12 grade Career Development students how to compile the necessary internet resources to learn about ethical standards in the workplace. The teacher will allow students 40 minutes each instructional day to internet search for ethical standards materials that relates to their specific professional and occupational interests, and also to bookmark the websites with Zotero. The students will primarily work at separate computer stations, but will also collaborate together. If the time allotted in class is not enough, then the teacher will also hold 1 to 2 hour open attendance sessions before and after school for those who wish to work on this assignment. The instructional strategy used for this lesson idea will be primarily independent study through the use of learning logs, but will also utilize interactive methods such as discussion and brainstorming. This tool allows students to gain a greater understanding of ethical standards by storing and comparing the specific standards of organizations that interest the student. With regards to the access to technology all students will use computers in class to compile information needed. The use of the internet will serve as the method of technology use.
Students will use Zotero to compile ethical standards related content. The students will specifically use this tool in a hands on approach to compile the ethical conduct standards of 10 actual organizations, companies, or corporations. The students will create a portable document format file (i.e. pdf) which lists a compilation of url links to ethical standards pages of organizations, companies, or corporations which professionally interest the students. This compilation will allow students to understand the general ethical expectations of the workplace.
The Zotero tool allows the student to use the internet to gain direct access to important organization ethical standards. This tool also allows students the opportunity to easily compile ethical standards information of organizations that interest them. TEKS in §127.13(c)(3)(G) expects the student to identify ethical standards and comply with organizational policies and procedures.
